  27. Well, folks, here it is at last - the list of publicly accessible news 
  28. servers. The list has gotten a lot smaller than it was originally. 
  29. Many sites have chosen to be removed.  But there still are more than 
  30. 20 sites on the list, and as an extra special bonus I am providing an 
  31. additional 34 sites that provide access to the news through Gopher.

  42. PUBLICLY ACCESSIBLE NEWS SERVERS
  43.  
  44. These sites have been found to be available to the general
  45. public for NNTP service through port 119.  You will need 
  46. Newsreader software to make use of these sites. These sites 
  47. were found to be open at the time they were surveyed, but I
  48. make no guarantees about future access. News administrators
  49. are free to close off sites to the public at any time. I will remove 
  50. any site from this list that asks to be removed.

  52. I have not surveyed what is available at each of these sites.
  53. Please do not overload these sites looking for pornography. The
  54. administrators of these sites have been notified about this list,
  55. and they are unlikely to make prurient material available to the 
  56. public. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE A GUEST IN MAKING USE
  57. OF THESE FACILITIES.  The news adminstrators who support
  58. open access to the Usenet News are voluntarily doing a service

  142. (quick'n'dirty) access policy: news.uni-stuttgart.de is a RS6000 with
  143. 128 MB RAM, FDDI interface, and a few Gigabytes disk (10, soon 15 8-).
  144. Its also our campus anon-ftp server. Its running inn-1.4.
  145. There are a few special hierarchies (e.g. russian, japanese, french etc),
  146. but no alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.*, alt.sex.* and some other
  147. groups the university administration was not able to allow, please
  148. don't waste your time trying.

  150. Do not abuse this service. If You want to use our nntp service
  151. on a regular basis, please contact news-adm@news.uni-stuttgart.de
  152. so that we *know* who You are and why You use our server. This helps us to
  153. defend the open access policy [and we've seen hard times ...]. We will
  154. disable any domain without further notice if we have problems with it.

  158. BOOKMARKS TO SITES PROVIDING GOPHER ACCESS TO USENET.

  161. bookmark file for your Gopher client. Alternatively you can point your
  162. client directly at the site. On a UNIX system, for example, you could point
  163. your Gopher client at the La Tech Usenet site with the command
